The school provides support and assistance for children with both remedial and extension needs. Trained staff work with individuals or small groups.
The Koru Room team are a highly experienced team of Specialist Teachers and Kaiawhina āko/Learning Support Assistants. Tahatai Coast School is a mainstreamed learning environment that aims for full inclusion for all students, while enabling children to reach their full potential.
"Tahatai means people that make me feel respected and they make me feel cared for. They treat me nicely. I feel like I can be myself and people don’t judge me about it." (Evie)
At Tahatai Coast School we:
- Have ethical standards and leadership that build the culture of an inclusive school
- Have well-organised systems, effective teamwork and constructive relationships that identify and support the inclusion of all students
- Use innovative and flexible practices that respond to the needs of all students
- Look through the ‘cultural lens’ of the ākonga and their whānau
- Timely and appropriate resourcing for individuals and small groups
We are here to help - we are all in this together
We recognise the need for all children to experience challenges in order for them to develop resilience. The learner, their whānau, kaiako and possible outside agencies, work together to ensure realistic learning outcomes are planned for, worked towards and achieved.
Cultural diversity is celebrated within the Tahatai Coast School community.
Funded support is accessed to support community evenings and intervention and extension language programmes.
Teachers will work with families to develop an approach to homework that suits the learning needs of the child while taking into account the realities of home life and extra-curricular activities.
Parents and caregivers are encouraged to take an active interest in what your child is learning and help them achieve their learning goals. This might involve listening to them read, testing them on their spelling words or timing them to complete their maths basic facts.
